Jessica on top of the world

At the weekend Jas and I went up to Liverpool for a short break. We’ve been up there together several times before, and we both know the place from years back, so we didn’t do too much sight-seeing: just wandering around the new Liverpool One centre and the Albert and Wapping Docks, a pint or two in the Philharmonic.

We ended up being captivated by the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, and in particular by the performance of Jessica Ennis in the Heptathlon. She missed the Olympics last year through a nasty foot injury, but has been having a brilliant year since returning. She led the field all the way through, and came close to equalling her national high jump record on the way to setting a personal best score of 6731 – only 100 short of Denise Lewis’ British Record. All the way through, she seemed to remain calm and composed

At the age of 23, she’s got to be one of the hopes for a gold medal in the London Olympics in 2012. Hopefully by then she’ll have built on her success and won a few more championships as well.

This is her winning the 800m to seal victory
. What a finish!
